The Coasters were, in the opinion of noted rock writer Dave Marsh, ‘the funniest group in rock’n’roll history’, while author and historian Arnold Shaw described their music as ‘ebullient, energising, entertaining, expressive and danceable.’ High praise indeed – and as this album confirms, well deserved. the Coasters’ songs are more famous than the group themselves.
Their music will endure forever, a fact underlined by the Broadway-staged musical revue Smokey Joe’s Café that received seven Tony nominations and won a Grammy Award. The Coasters’ hits were a large part of the score.
