When Miles Davis entered into collaboration with Gil Evans for the recording of ‘Sketches Of Spain’ in 1959, the duo had already been responsible for the albums ‘Miles Ahead’ and ‘Porgy And Bess’ which had paired the trumpeter with a large ensemble arranged and conducted by the mercurial Evans. ‘Spain’ became a further extension of a marriage seemingly made in heaven as Davis revelled in settings tailor-made for him by a man totally sympathetic to his needs.
