Mozart was lucky to have got The Marriage of Figaro on to the stage of the Court Opera in Vienna on 1 May 1786. It was based on a play by the French playwright Beaumarchais which had fallen foul of the French censor in a Paris where, in less than three years’ time, the monarchy would be overthrown by bloody revolution. Although Mozart held a Court appointment as Kapellmeister, he needed a success in Italian opera to improve his position. His meeting in Vienna with the Italian poet and dramatist Lorenzo da Ponte proved decisive. The two men struck sparks off each other. Inspired by da Ponte’s libretto, Mozart was enabled musically to express fully his profound understanding of human frailty and his innate generosity of spirit. Figaro the manservant proves to be the most intelligent and resourceful of all the male characters; Susanna, surely the most adorable female character in all opera, is courageous, self-possessed, determined and spirited; the Count, no cut-out villain but a man of his class living in the past yet finally able to embrace the new spirit of the age; and the Countess, a woman of unassailable integrity and grace who, against all the odds, is able to reconcile with the man she loves. They are clothed in some of the most sublime music even Mozart conceived.
