Though it’s been used in almost every type of musical setting (even classical), something about the harmonica makes it seem best suited to acoustic music, and to many people it probably automatically brings to mind the early folk work of Bob Dylan and his imitators. But Dylan notwithstanding, for some listeners a harmonica is simply and purely the sound of the blues – it’s the wail of a distant train whistle, or the cry of a broken heart (and when two lovers part, sometimes it’s both things at once). From down country up to big bad Chicago, this 2CD set showcases some of the best (and best-known) exponents of the blues harp in action, from the mid-1950s through to the early 1960s.
