Guy Mitchell recorded with many fine orchestras of the period including those of Percy Faith (‘You’re Not in My Arms Tonight’ and ‘Sweetheart Of Yesterday’) and Glenn Osser (‘Pennies From Heaven’ and ‘The Singing Hills’). However, it was with Ray Conniff that he scored his biggest hit, ‘Singing The Blues’. Recorded in 1956, it sold more than ten million copies worldwide. If the casual listener knows no other track by Mitchell they will certainly have heard of this one! Although covered by Tommy Steele in the UK, it was Guy’s version that was considered superior by the record-buying public; it stayed at Number 1 for ten weeks in the US and topped the charts in the UK during early 1957. Four of his singles reached the Number 1 spot in Britain, and by the end of the Fifties his total record sales had exceeded forty-four million, including six million-sellers. His popularity shows no sign of waning to this day, for there will always be a place for a singer with an assured vocal technique singing songs that, one moment, will have us laughing and, the next, have us wiping away a tear.
