The word Mod is nowadays too often associated with the infamous ‘Mods and Rockers’ pitched battles on the beaches of Brighton and Clapton in during 1964. The origins of the name, however, go back to the Fifties when it was used to describe a ‘modern’ youth culture distinct from the ‘trad’ (traditional) one. Opinions differ as to its exact origins but it is undeniable that some of the ingredients in the melting pot included the existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre, a love of the Italian fashion style, the Jewish middle-class culture in London’s East End, the beatnik coffee-bar-culture and, of course, scooters!

Although the music of the Mod culture was originally the modern jazz of Dave Brubeck and the Modern Jazz Quartet, it wasn’t long before the jukeboxes in coffee bars, their typical haunts, began playing R&B and black American music which was often brought over to the UK by American GIs.

Just put these albums in the CD player, turn up the volume and wallow in the essence of Mod.
