You don’t see many of them now, but record shops used to be the way most people acquired music. Glenn Wallichs, who ran a store on Hollywood’s Sunset and Vine, had an idea that making records could be even more exciting than selling them. He mentioned his dream to a customer, songwriter Johnny Mercer, in the autumn of 1941: Mercer brought in songwriting pal Buddy DeSylva, who’d risen to executive producer rank at Paramount Records. Together the trio formed Capitol Records in April 1942. This 2CD set covers Capitol’s contribution to the rockabilly craze of the Fifties, featuring highlights such as Gene Vincent and Skeets McDonald, as well as other lesser-known but just as exciting acts.
