Long before automobiles became commonplace, the method of transport that symbolised freedom and independence in America was the train… “Go west, young man” was the advice offered to all those hoping to prosper, be they gold prospector or farmer. The wagon trains disappeared over the horizon, replaced by steel rails that set the ground humming. The railroad first crossed the continent in 1869, and it wasn’t long before those steaming, blazing engines were commemorated in song. Gathered together for this collection are folk, blues, rockabilly and skiffle songs - all of which celebrate that great American institution – the railroad.
