Instrumental music of the mid-fifties was a mixture of silky stringladen orchestral pieces, rhythmic combos, exotic jungle inspired sounds, and piano led melodies. The electric guitar was evolving from its early semi-acoustic stage when rudimentary pick-ups had been added by imaginative big band players and by the later fifties the solid bodied electric guitar was affordable enough for young players to use. All over America teens formed groups who aimed to play basic music very loudly, an approach that was followed in Britain and Europe quickly afterwards. Our compilation collects some of the very best known artists from both sides of the pond, and covers the later fifties and early sixties years when popularity of guitar groups was at its height. Many of these records were huge hits, but many were not because they didn't get the breaks needed to catch the public's ear. The great unknowns were in many cases just as good if not better than the hit artists, proving the worth for the hardcore collector of sets like this.
