Jazz musicians are noted for having long careers. But most fade in and out of fashion and popularity. Certainly, few have been as influential during their career as Miles Dewey Davis. Between taking up the trumpet in his early years just before World War II and his death in 1991, his destiny was to be a musical leader. Recorded in July and August 1958 in New York, 'Porgy And Bess' took as its basis the famous Gershwin musical, and saw arranger Gil Evans taking a modal approach to arrangement, turning away from the complex chord changes of bebop. The result was one of Miles's best-selling albums, and arguably the best of Davis and Evans' joint projects alongside 'Sketches Of Spain'.
